Chronicles of the Num Oluur II Legends of the Sea Nomads

Design skills possibly worse than a few years ago?

After going through a Battle between aspiring divinities, I wanted to take the second game of the Chronicles of the Num Oluur into a ‘Second Age’. In Legend of the Sea Nomads, I wanted to invite players to explore the circulation of myths, legends and civilizations, sometimes through cooperation and trade, sometimes through confrontation. Ambitious for a game I wanted to keep playable under an hour!

The game at this stage of development could probably still have some improved mechanics, and I was hoping I could make it a bit lighter in terms of components material needed. Still, I felt the project was ripe enough to be shared, so here it is.

4 player game setup

All nomadic ‘tribes’ start their journey from the Same Primordial whirlpool. Boarding small groups of passengers, the will travel on troubled waters to transport legends to their new settlements. Exploring uncharted territories, each player will need to weigh between exchanges, cooperation or confrontation to ensure their tribe develops a thriving culture.

As an additional twist, each player is given an Original Myth to start the game. Not shared with other players, fulfilling this Original Myth will be a fundamental condition for victory. Besides this block, other layers composing a player’s victory will take into account legends written and shared, settlements built and the vastness of the seas explored.

Iteration #1 of Legend boat designs

And obviously, the game game should be played with some music in the air, so here’s a playlist you can use:

The design struggles are still (very) real, playtesting not quite there yet, so I welcome and appreciate all possible feedback. Legends of the Sea Nomads took way too much time to be finalized, hopefully Chapter III will be ready to be share before 2030!

In the meantime, to Start Playing….

  • The rules are here!
  • Myths, Legends, and Feats, as well as a scorecard templats can be found in the 2 spreadsheets here.
  • Examples for all game components can be found here.
  • Directional die is a simple 8-sided die, if you don’t have one with directions, numbers 1 to 8 will do the job!
  • The 8 different wind directions work in exactly the same way the do for the Storm of the Gods.
  • And remember, components from many other games can be used to fill in the missing bits!

Godspeed and safe journeys through the troubled waters of the Num Oluur!

Terrifying storms and drawing skills ahead!
